This work comprises the experiences and reflections of a young anthropologist with a keen interest in the psychological profile of an "ordinary Navajo". This is a specific portrait of Forster Bennett, a Navajo in his fifties. He was part of a generation of children who had lost his parents to the influenza epidemic, was raised by kinfolk, and then served in WWII.
"...This account unfolds quite naturally as the author-intruder gains the Navajo's trust, and both parties move from a relationship of mutual curiosity to one of tentative friendship.
