Limited edition (750 copies designed by Lawton Kennedy and printed by The Howell-North Press in Berkeley, CA); 6 1/2 x 9 1/2; pp. [10], v-vi, [2], 1-170, [2]; illustrated green cloth over boards; gilt title to spine; deckled page edges; portrait frontis; minor wear to corners and tips of spine, near fine condition. Clear acetate jacket with 2 closed cuts to upper corners and faint wear, very good. Initially published as 18 separate articles in the San Francisco newspaper 'The Golden Era' in 1853, the stories follow the pre-Gold Rush events in California through the years of 1845 to 1847.
