Sobre este artículo

Original "Final Statement" for Private John Wallace of the 24th Infantry, dated May 1, 1875, 2 pages, signed by Wallace with his mark and by John Gilmore, Captain of the 24th Infantry

Plus a 2-page document settling the accounts for Private Wallace, dated May 7, 1875.

John Wallace, a soldier with "black complexion, black eyes, black hair, and by occupation a farmer," was part of the all-black 24th Infantry known as Buffalo Soldiers serving in the western United States. Their missions included garrisoning frontier posts, battling American Indians, protecting roadways against bandits, and guarding the border between the United States and Mexico. John Gilmore was commissioned into the 16th New York Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1892 for "distinguished conduct" at the Battle of Salem Heights, Virginia, May 3, 1863. He saw duty on the western frontier, served as Assistant Adjutant General of the U.S. Army, and during the Spanish American War he served as Chief of Staff to Lieutenant General Nelson A. Miles, serving in both Puerto Rico and Cuba. Important documents, signed by a Buffalo Soldier and a Medal of Honor recipient.

Fine. Scarce.
