Boston & New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company / The Riverside Press, 1901. Good+ condition. A square copy with sound inner hinges. NO owner's name or bookplate. Mild age toning to cover and pages Short closed edge tear to two leaves (in the margin only; text is not affected). 5" wide by 7.5" tall. Bound in the original blue pictorial cloth, lettered in gold on the spine and front cover. Top edge gilt. The front cover features the silhouette of a black cat over a white and gold shield, with a motto in Latin. All cover gilt is still reasonably bright and shiny. First printing, with 1901 on the title page, and "Published October, 1901" so stated on the copyright page. This is a delightful compilation of cat lore. Claire Neckler, in her book FOUR CENTURIES OF CAT BOOKS, A BIBLIOGRAPHY, says this book is "A cat classic." Illustrated by Elizabeth Bonsall with several drawings, including a tissue-guarded frontispiece. The 9 chapters are: 1) The cat of antiquity; 2) The dark ages; 3) Persecution; 4) Renaissance; 5) The cat of Albion; 6) The cat in art; 7) The cat triumphant; 8) Some cats of France; 9) The cat to-day. Laid in is an envelope containing the author's obituary from the New York Times. Neckler #1661.. First Edition. Hardcover. Good+ condition/No jacket. Illus. by Bonsall, Elizabeth. xvi, 306pp.

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well.
