[African American- Film] In the Heat of the Night and its sequel They Call Me Mister Tibbs Archive of 15 Original Movie Lobby cards. United Artists Corporation, 1967; 1970. Includes seven colorful lobby cards and three black and white original photographs from In The Heat of the Night, and five colorful lobby cards from the sequel, They Call me Mr. Tibbs. Measures 7" x 5" to 11" x 14". Poitier's In The Heat of the Night was monumental in many aspects, most notably as Poitier slapped a White murder suspect on screen, changing how the stories of Black Americans were portrayed on film. Additionally, Poitier became the first Black male to play a detective role. Santa Barbara International Film Association asserts that "The slap transcends the confines of the scene: Tibbs's hand across a White face reclaims black male dignity". The film's sequel's title, They Call Me Mr. Tibbs, directly mirrors on one of the most notable lines in Poitier's acting career. The line speaks to the frustrating experiences of minorities who have to endure racist attitudes in rural America. In each The Heat of the Night lobby cards, Poitier is captured interacting with various White policemen and detectives. In two photographs from They Call Me Mr. Tibbs, Poitier is in an intense fight with a White male. In another image. Both films were instrumental to the shift in Black male portrayal in film. Lobby cards bear minor stains and six cards have pinholes from being displayed throughout theaters globally, not affecting quality of the images. All cards bright and colorful, overall in very good condition.
