The book has a picture of Ginsberg and Bob Dylan at the front, sitting at the grave of Jack Kerouac. It contains sheet music notes for many of Ginsberg's songs. In this book he is stressing the links between poetry and song, and trying to reach a larger audience. In these poems, no doubt influenced by the song tradition, he takes up rhyme. The book demonstrates the poet's willingness to evolve and try new things. Buddhism is a big influence here too. When you experiment, take risks and try something new, you don't always win. These poems just are not as good as Ginsberg's first volume with City Lights in the 1950's, with such poems as "Howl" and "Supermarket in California."
