Small amount of hinge and corner restoration. Printed on fine crisp Holland paper. Name in old hand written in upper corner of front blank. Bookplate on inside front cover. A good example of publisher Jean Joseph Barbou's series of classics. Barbou's classics were designed in both their correctness and in their beauty to supplant the 17th century Elzevir publications. Copper engraved vignette (medallion portrait) on title page as well as on p. 72 [Ii verso] and on p. 304 [Pp verso]. Bound in 19th century straight grain green morocco. The gilt crest and initials of Rev. Theodore Williams are stamped in gilt on the front cover. His coat of arms is also stamped in gilt on the rear cover. All edges are gilt. A penciled note on the inside end-leaf attributes the binding to J. Clark. Armorial bookplate of William Proby K.P. 5th Earl of Carysfort (1836-1909) by artist Charles W. Sherborn on inside front cover – " Earl of Carysfort Elton Hall 1894." Color along hinges neatly touched up; some discoloration on the boards near the spine. Interior is generally clean with minor spots of foxing; some extremely faint damp staining is present on lower inner margins. Printed on good quality paper. Black cloth on boards. Top edge gilt. Very light spotting to title and half title pages but overall a bright clean copy.

Leiden: Jean Elsevier [ Elzevir ], 1658. Hardcover. See Description. Small 12mo. pp. 417, [1]. With extra engraved title page. Bound in period full red morocco. Spine is gilt in compartments; boards are richly gilt with floral borders. The binding is well preserved with only minor spots of wear. All edges of the book block are gilt. The extra engraved title is tightly trimmed with no outer margin. Interior pages contain occasional mild marginal spotting but are otherwise generally clean. Lucan’s epic poem "Pharsalia" (written during the reign of Nero) concerns the Roman Civil War between Julius Caesar and Pompey. In 48 b.c.e the conflict came to a conclusion with Pompey’s defeat on the Thessalian plains of Pharsalus. The poem then extends down to the capture of Egyptian Alexandria. Slightest bumps to the lower tips of the covers.; This poem is written in Levine's characteristic style of short, declarative phrasing and the lines speak in the voice of a child, the voice of an adult, and the voice of the wall, all presumed to be in Spain. The dedication references the girl Pili, the author's wife, and Spain, for which he had a long-standing fascination. Prior to his 2011 appointment as Poet Laureate of the United States, Philip Levine won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, the National Book Award, the Ruth Lily Prize in Poetry and the Wallace Stevens Award. First edition 1st printing, Near Fine unread book with slight shelf wear bottom edges, soft spine ends, small spot front page edges, and several very slight glue spots on the front quarter cloth, apparently from binding; in a Near Fine jacket with wear and slight color loss at spine ends and corners, white flaps slightly age yellowed. This copy of her second novel has been signed by Walker on the title page.

The Luck of the Bodkins first published in the United Kingdom on October 11, 1935 by Herbert Jenkins, and in the United States on January 3, 1936 by Little, Brown and Company. The two editions are significantly different, though the plot remains the same. The novel was serialized in Passing Show magazine (UK) from 21 September to 23 November 1935, and this version was published as the UK edition. For its US magazine appearance, in the Red Book, between August 1935 and January 1936, Wodehouse re-wrote the story, reducing its length, and this became the US book edition. Fine minus, unread book with touch of shelf wear and slight pushing at bottom of spine, there is a small sticker from John Cole’s Book and Craft Shop, La Jolla, California on bottom of back paste-down, at spine; in a Very Good jacket that has light edge and corner wear, touch of color loss spine ends and corners, rubbing to both panels, with several light overwrite impressions. Blurbed by Larry McMurtry on front jacket panel, but with his name misspelled. This copy has been signed by Abbey on the front end page. Essays beyond the city walls, mostly about deserts.
