Sobre este artículo

New York/London: Joseph Cristadoro/Bailliere, 1880-1884. Gustave Joseph Witkowski (1844-1923) was born in Nevers, France. His father was a doctor but died at an early age. Eventually he also took up the medical arts, graduating from the Paris School of Medicine. During the Franco-Prussian War , he took up the post of ambulance doctor At the end of his three-year service, he obtained the bronze medal for his services. After the war, on August 13, 1872, he defended his doctoral thesis, entitled "On the method to be followed in the clinical examination of eye diseases", before the Faculty of Medicine of Paris. In 1877, he became a doctor for the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord, a position he held until 1888. In 1888, he set up as a doctor in Paris at 17, Avenue Trudaine. He was a prolific writer and tried to make medicine more understandable to the layperson. He is now best remembered for his colorful anatomical atlases with moving parts (i.e. flaps). Here we present seven of those atlases. In all of the atlases the anatomical part under discussion is laid into the publisher's printed boards and secured there by a thin string. These portfolios all measure 11 x 14 3/4 inches and usually have a parts list on the front pastedown. The figures were meant to be taken out of the folders and studied in conjunction with the accompanying booklets. The boards have some foxing ad a bit of staining and three of them have new cloth tape spines in imitation of the original. They are a mixture of British and American editions and the list is as follows. A Movable Atlas showing the positions of the various organs of voice, speech and taste by means of superposed coloured plates. London, Baillière,1884. Second edition, 2 colored figures with numerous numbered flaps. With the accompanying booklet (38 pp.) A Movable Atlas showing the mechanism of hearing and mastication by means of superposed coloured plates: the ear and teeth. London: Bailliere. (1880). First edition. 2 color plates with numerous numbered flaps. With the accompanying booklet (40 pp.). A Movable Atlas showing the structure and functions of the brain, the cerebellum and medulla oblongata . 2 colored figures with numerous numbered flaps. London: Bailliere, Tindall, and Cox, [ca. 1880]. First edition. 2 colored figures with numerous numbered flaps. With the accompanying booklet (32 pp.). A Pictorial Manikin : or movable atlas of the human body showing the positions of the internal organs. New York: Joseph Christadoro, 1880. First U.S. edition. One colored figures with numerous numbered flaps. With the accompanying booklet (12 pp.).
