London: John Murray, 1855. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Complete in two volumes: Volume I: x (1) 395pp; frontis. + 14 illus., 2 folding. Volume II: vi (1) 372pp + 32p publisher's advertisements; 15 illus., 1 folding (large map of Damascus, properly repaired). Original brown cloth with gilt titles and dec., expertly rebacked, preserving the original spines and end-papers. Some foxing of prelims, minor edgewear to covers, but overall a very nice copy. This is also an association copy in that it was the property of Henry Baker Tristram (1822-1906), with signed presentation inscriptions in both volumes from the publisher, John Murray to Tristram, and Tristram's bookplate in each volume. Laid in is a 4p letter, hand-written and signed by the author, J.L. Porter, to Tristram, dated 22 March, 1875, describing to Tristram his latest travels on the Moab Plains in 1874. (Tristram was the author of 'The Land of Israel, A Journal of Travels in Palestine', published in 1855.).

Octavo, pp xii, 310, illustrated (including two chromolithographs by Keulemans), a rather poor copy, lacking the folding map, an ex-Boots library copy in red library cloth, a bit used and weak internally with cracked hinges (through front and rear hinges tight and strong), some plates a little frayed, a small stamp on the front endpaper and a library label on the rear, the cloth rather worn, marked on the upper cover, the spine torn. A useful working copy. [Andre was an explorer and collector of natural history specimens . He wrote a glossary of common and scientific names of plants and animals and put together a collection of 1800 bird skins which are held at Tring. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. He travelled largely in Venezuala and Columbia and introduced the Anthurium plant to Trinidad & Tobago, 1915.]. Signed by Author. First English edition. Cloth. Fair.
