Robert William Chambers was a United States artist and novelist, most popular for his book of short tales with the title, The King in Yellow, circulated in 1895.

H. P. Lovecraft stated of Robert in a letter to Clark Ashton Smith:

?Chambers is like Rupert Hughes and a few other fallen Titans ? equipped with the right brains and education but wholly out of the habit of using them."

In spite of Robert?s helpful subsequent leaving of the peculiar supernatural fiction, these primary works are all that are still in publication during most of the 20th century, in gratitude to Lovecraft's addition of them in the analytical study Supernatural Horror in Literature.

Frederic Taber Cooper commented:

?So much of Mr Chambers's work exasperates, because we feel that he might so easily have made it better."

Analytical studies of Robert?s horror and fantasy novel such as Lee Weinstein's essay in Supernatural Fiction Writers, Brian Stableford's essay in the St. James Guide to Horror, Ghost and Gothic Writers and a chapter in S. T. Joshi's book The Evolution of the Weird Tale published in 2004.

Robert?s book The Tracer of Lost Persons was adapted into a continuous from 1937 to 1954, old-style radio crime drama, Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons, by soap producers Frank and Anne Hummert.

Robert?s The King in Yellow has influenced several modern writers, s2uch as Karl Edward Wagner, Joseph S. Pulver, Lin Carter, James Blish, Nic Pizzolato, Michael Cisco, Ann K. Schwader, Robert M. Price, Galad Elflandsson and Charles Stross.
