He was raised in rural Massachusetts. He attended college in Albion, Michigan, married Susy Schweinsberg, and managed to stay out of the war. Attended graduate school at the University of Montana in Missoula, became a student of Richard Hugo, William Kittredge, and Madeline Defrees. He worked for MT's Writers in the Schools program, moved to Kalispell in the Flathead Valley, He and Susy had two boys, Montana and Jackson.
