Volume 1 describes 7 classes, 108 families, 470 genera and 1327 species, with keys to enable their identification. It covers the ferns and fern allies, cycads, conifers and the first section of the flowering plants including the dicotyledon families Brassicaceae, Casuarinaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Dilleniaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lauraceae, Malvaceae, Polygonaceae, Ranumculaceae, Rhamnaceae and Rosaceae.
