FLOWERS OF THE ENGADINE DRAWN FROM NATURE

WINCHESTER: PRIVATELY PUBLISHED, 1891 Sea Green Cloth Boards with black titles to spine and gilt blocked flower plant to front panel. 285 x 200 mm approx. Victorian Green End Papers, [vi] + 22pp + [x] being index + 224 Hand Coloured Plates. Printed by Warren and Son for the author who points out in the preface that the work has the advantage over other books on the Alpine flora of The Engadine Switzerland in that the illustrations are life size and drawn and coloured from freshly gathered specimens. This would have been a very time consuming book to produce due to the many hand coloured paintings - up to four to some pages and although the issue number is not stated it is likely to have been very small certainly in comparison to modern book production methods and consequently is quite a scarce book.The copy offered has recently been re-backed by us with a new mull, back strip and close match cloth laid under the original spine and re-cased with replacement end papers. The Free front end-papers have been made using the originals to preserve the previous owner name (the original colourists of the work) and inscription which is part of the history of the book. The inscription after the p.o.n. reads given to me by W Heathcote in remembrance of many pleasant hours spent in painting 360 of these plates for him. NB The original inscription appears to have read given to "her" but it has been altered. VG (Book- Some loss to original cloth spine at head and tail with nick to cloth midway.
