New York: D. Appleton, 1855. Ninth edition. Hardcover. fair. Octavo in brown cloth with spine ornately lettered in gilt. One leaf of publisher's ads at front. Engraved frontis on dark brown stock of a comic "Oliver Suggs, Jr.") . vii+ 330 pp. with publisher's catalogue. The ninth edition. A working copy, no endpapers, foxing througout and some light tidemarking to tha final third of the text block. Both gutters frayed but the book is actually tight in the binding. A collection of offbeat and often humorous anecdotes about the ante-bellum deep South. Some of these had appeared previously in The Southern Literary Messenger magazine.
