"The comments on the trail contained in the footnotes of this work are based on personal reconnoissance; for I have retracted exactly or approximately Anza's entire itinerary. The excellence of the diaries (Font's) is attested by the fact that I have been able to identify practically every water hole and camp site. Most of the photographic illustrations represent scenes along the way. They have been chosen to show the trail as Font and Anza saw it, rather than to exhibit its present day cultural aspects."
