Johannesburg: D. E. McConnell & Co., 1906. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This is a nice copy of the uncommon South African edition of volume IV of this excellent study of the early days of Football in the 20th Century. Volume IV of the four volume set usually ends, at page 200, after the General Index to all four volumes. This edition continues for another 64 pages, covering football in South Africa, with 4 sections on: Cape Colony; Football in Natal; Football in the Transvaal and Officials of the S.A.F.A. Extensively illustrated with pictures of teams and players and officials. It would appear that only volume IV was labeled, on its spine, "South African Edition". Inscribed to rear of frontis "Mr. Joseph Porch with best wishes from AS 31 7 18". The plate on page 80, showing Bristol City F.C., is annotated in pencil with physical details labelled "Army Weight" and measurements of chest, leg and arm with an arrow pointing to the top row in which "A. Spear" is standing and it is possible that the presentation inscription was written by Arthur Spear who played for Bristol City from 1904 to his retirement in 1911. Illustrated boards in very good condition but slightly marked through handling (see photos) and the spine is rubbed to its hinges and top. Internally very good with all plates present.

The signatures were obtained by team member Gunnar Nordahl at a reunion dinner in the 1970's. The card measures approximately 15cm x 11cm and has been signed by Buffon, Silvestre, Foglia, Annovazzi, Tognon, Bonomi, Gren, Liedholm, Burini, Nordahl and Renosto.
