"After the sad, and at times more than a little mad, history of Phillipps's personal relationships described in my previous volume, it is with relief that I turn to my main task, the history of the Phillipps library. The account of the formation of the collection will occupy two numbers of Phillipps Studies, and a further number will be devoted to a record of its dispersal. The present volume, describing the acquisition of manuscripts Nos. 1-10817 and printed books Nos. 1-5557, depicts in outline the collector's activities up to the year 1840.
