An infant prodigy, encouraged by Beethoven and ripening into the most brilliant pianist of his day, a national hero in Hungary, and lionized in every European capital, Liszt knew many of the great Romantics of his day - Chopin, Berlioz, George Sand - and was Wagner's closest friend and champion.
