Six spine compartments between double gilt rules. Former owner's name inscribed on front free endpaper: Samuel G. Allen. Early American Imprints, first series, 28896. The very scarce first American edition of the second edition of this work, which included the author's response to the critical reception of the first edition. In Good+ Conditon: 1-cm. leather lacking at head of spine; front joint cracked; leather is rubbed; scattered foxing; otherwise clean and tight.
