In A Free State is a collection of three stories: “One out of Many,” “Tell Me Who to Kill,” and the title piece, “In a Free State.” It is essentially about the experience of being out of place, and the stories are about people who find themselves in places that they don’t belong, or who are made to feel by others that they do not belong. This novel is a provocative, brilliantly written exploration of the often tumultuous relationships between different cultures.
