Inscribed & Autographed by author FLEP. "For Bill Dirks… With appreciation of your openness, insistence on excellence and commitment to better schools. Many thanks for your kindness & friendship, and for you insight and advice. This book gained from your suggestions. Best Wishes …. Joe Nathan 6-19-83 (Bill Dirks is one mentions in the acknowledgments.) and underlined.

Joe's one of the inventors of charter schools. This book is a great picture into the steps in his thinking that happened before the charter school movement.

The author offers concrete examples of youth participation projects such as consumer action activities, daycare centers, peer counseling and the highly successful Foxfire project all of which enable students to combine classroom learning with community service.
