GEORGE BELL & SONS. Very Good. 1892. Hardcover. No. XI of 35 on Japanese vellum. 3/4 leather, 5 raised bands gilt, 5 elaborate gilt panels, all a little edge worn and rubbed. Large foxed bookplate of John and Evelyn Dudley-Scott inside front cover, with 14 lines in pencil with scholarly description of the heraldry of the family bookplate. Also on next free marbled (clouded blue sky) end paper is foxed bookplate of Ada M. Hopson, 1910, engraved by W. F. (william Fowler) Hopson, with two small ink lines on bottom left of plate: Merrybrook / 1930. Plate itself has scene noted as Brookside 1898. End papers showing a little edge browning from turn-ins. No binder's name evident. Hopson, resident of CT, (1849-1935) famous for his engravings: member Grolier Society, Club of Odd Volumes, CA Bookplate Society. Appears to have notes of rare book dealer Peter Keisoglof from 1948. .

There we were stewards and renewers of a decorative Queen Anne Victorian. On Cape Cod since 1969, we take care of the newest (1860) Crocker family home in Barnstable's village of Cotuit: a tall peaked Italianate now painted pink and four other colors. The owner's training has included work in four libraries and apprenticeship with the Irving Ephraim (1908) - 1989) who began his own career during the depression. Assistants have always known the meaning of "book person." Remembering with fondness Mr. E. and the enormous influence of our home town librarians, we try to continue their tradition of service.
