Three pages, 1949. A sprawling, witty and provocative letter written by Pound early on during his extended stay at St. Elizabeth's hospital (12 years, from 1948-1859) to Helen Rossetti Angeli, the daughter of famed Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood co-founder William Michael Rossetti. Written in pencil on the full opened face, with two notes perhaps by HAR, and then on both flaps on the verso, with two wrap-around portions also possibly by HA Rossetti. A lengthy and fascinating letter. "Dear Mrs. Angeli, Thanks v. much for yo/ volume. but must protest no jacket yr/sister Olivia being certainly more alive than anyone in Italy definite purf, not jacket vs not all brit/publrs/ are of the line of Barabbas & born to be damned- perhaps the very printing machinery in England [side flap] Yeats' definition of yr island 'The only country where a man will lie WITHOUT being paid for it' endemic [side flap] lie DOWN not being able to bear the Truth. cordially Ezra Pound." Durham, England, 1681; Final concord Latin indenture in highly mannered Gothic style, executed at the court of Durham during the reign of Charles II on the 26th day of May in the year 1681 before three identified justices and the Mayor of the City Of Durham. Plaintiff is John Garstell, deforciants are Mary Hopper and Anthony Craggs and wife Amice. At issue is a tenement comprised of messuage, an orchard, twenty acres of land, twenty acres of meadow, and twenty acres of pasture, together with all goods and appurtenances, at Wiserley, Weardale township, in the parish of Wolsingham, County Durham. A sum of 160 silver marks was paid, suggesting this property was almost certainly a freehold. Indeed the names of John Gastell, Anthony Craggs and John Hopper appear as Wolsingham freeholders for 1685 in H. Conyers Surtees’ "History Of The Parish Of Wolsingham." Salem, N.J., 1840. Hardcover. Good. [approx. 650] p.; 41 cm. Remains of original leather binding. Ledger book of David Smith Darmon (1815-1879), a saddler in Salem, N.J. The first part of the ledger begins on April 15, 1840, and goes to Feb. 26, 1858, in Salem, N.J. The next page is headed "Philadelphia July 16 1859." The Philadelphia entries run through March 1860. The next page is headed "The Regular Book of Entries Belonging to David S. Darmon" and starts with April 11, 1865, in Salem, N.J. This suggests that the business had been taken over by David Smith Darmon, one of the sons of David Smith Darmon (1815-1879), the latter generally known as Smith Darmon. This section runs to April 1875. The next section begins in Salem in Feb. 1889 but does not identify the person who "Commenced business this date." It runs to the beginning of 1892. 1872. Good. 1 leaf (37 x 24 cm.). Printed form with handwritten information, dated 27 Dec. 1872, and with the gilt state seal. John M. Palmer, Governor of Illinois, commissions Stephen J. Towson as Notary Public of Cook County, Illinois. Signed by Palmer and the Secretary of State Edward Rummel. John M. Palmer (1817-1900) was governor of Illinois from 1891 to 1897. He had fought for the Union during the American Civil War, rising from colonel to brigadier general, and served as Kentucky's military governor. Edward Rummel (1838-1894) was Secretary of State of Illinois from 1869 to 1873. In Good Condition: 1 horizontal and 2 vertical creases, starting to separate; staining and discoloration; minor chipping along 2 sides.

Eine kurze Untersuchung nach anderen Belegen und Formen über diesen Stempel ergab, dass solche Stempel auch mit anderen Gaubezeichnungen bekannt sind. Es handelte sich bei diesen Aktionen um deutschlandweite Buchsammlungen, die das Ziel verfolgten, den Soldaten an der Front Bücher zukommen zu lassen.
Durchgeführt wurde die Aktion "Buchspende für die Deutsche Wehrmacht" vom Kriegs-Winterhilfswerk, dem ein Aufruf Rosenbergs voranging. Weier near Horburg (Wihr-en-Plaine), 1751; tall quarto (8 1/2" x 13"), 418 pages. Original manuscript of the last will and testament of Maria Balzinger (Baltzinger), deceased wife of Mathias Steib, official of the local court and tenant of Pfalz-Zweibrucken ducal estate at Weier near Horburg in the Alsace region. Contains detailed inventories of all personal and real property for both spouses, complete with monetary valuations, the names of all family members and beneficiaries, and full transcriptions of the couple’s original marriage agreements recorded at the City Hall in Colmar, November 26, 1703. Text in German, entirely repeated in French, consisting of 209 leaves of handmade watermarked paper written both sides, for a total of 418 pages. A valuable primary resource, with genealogical and historical data for a privileged Alsace family. Dated at Weier near Horburg, September 13, 1751. Fine condition, in original sewn binding. 1814. Near Fine. On 25 March 1814 Margaret Cauffman of Philadelphia, gentlewoman, sold to Isaac Overholtzer of Norriton Township, Montgomery County, for $650 a lot of woodland of almost 5 acres in Providence Township, Montgomery Co., on the road leading from the Germantown and Perkiomen turnpike and on the Norristown Road. Signed by Margaret Cauffman; witnesses Sarah A. Cauffman, Catharine Wiseman, and Alexander J. Uhlyn; and Delaware County Judge Mark Willcox. Mark Willcox (1743-1827) was the son of Thomas Willcox (1689-1779), the founder of Ivy Mills, which produced the paper used for early currency of the United States. He continued to run the paper mill after his father's death in 1779; he also served as an associate judge for Delaware County from 1791 to 1823. His second wife was Anna Mary Cauffman, a sister of Margaret Cauffman. In Near Fine Condition; 1 x 10 cm. section lacking at lower left-hand corner, with minor loss of writing; otherwise, clean and bright.

German calligraphic manuscript on vellum, richly decorated with colourful ornaments in upper, right and left margins. Berlin 1761. German manuscript on vellum, dated Berlin, 29 November 1761. With beautifully coloured ornamental decorations in right and left margins; with a crown above "FR" (for Fridericus Rex) at the centre of top margin framed by further hand coloured ornamental decorations. Signed by the master Christian Friederich Herr as well as by the guild elders Samuel Rhau and Johann Jacob Gillet. Oblong folio (353 x 610 mm). Traces of folds. An incision at the lower margin indicates that a seal was once present. The document was issued for August Friederich Nicolai from Brandenburg, who had been apprenticed to Christian Friederich Herr for six years since Christmas 1755 and now becoming a member of the Berlin guild of merchants for exotic spices and other exotic foodstuffs. Careful stipulations are made as to maintenance of all buildings and fences, crops to be planted, types and frequency of fodders and manures to be used, retention of at least 30 head of meat cattle, mandatory condition of the property upon end of term, prohibition against the use of steam power of any kind, etc. Lessors are Rebecca E. Lippincott (née Kirkbride) and Eliza H. Kirkbride, both of Mullica Hill, Gloucester County, and Ella C. Stacy (Story?), wife of Theodore, of Camden County.
