London: Jonathan Cape, 1969. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 445, [1]. Original brown boards, spine lettered in gilt, dustjacket printed in maroon and black and blocked in gilt, top edge maroon. Dustjacket a little rubbed with some loss to spine gilding, lightly discoloured in places. Bookplate signed by the author and dated August 2001 loosely inserted. The first edition of Fowles’ third and best-known novel, the basis for the 1981 Karel Reisz film starring Meryl Streep. A later signed bookplate has been loosely inserted.
Sinopsis
The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969), by John Fowles, is a period novel inspired by the 1823 novel Ourika, by Claire de Duras, which Fowles translated to English during 1977 (and revised in 1994). He was a great aficionado of Thomas Hardy, and, in particular, likened his heroine, Sarah Woodruff, to Tess Durbeyfield, the protagonist of Hardy’s popular novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891).

Established in 1957, McNaughtan's Bookshop is the oldest surviving secondhand and antiquarian bookshop in Scotland. Located in the basement of a listed 1820s tenement building at the top of Edinburgh's Leith Walk, we are the only open shop in Edinburgh holding membership of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association. We stock rare, antiquarian, and collectable books on all subjects, along with a substantial range of secondhand books for browsing. Our gallery space currently hosts Typewronger Books, offering new books and secondhand typewriters.
