Boards fine with clean gilt spine lettering, strong wash top, binding square and tight, illustrated endpapers clean, no writing, pages exceptionally clean and tidy. The dustjacket is fine, not price-clipped, no spine darkening or scuffing, just minuscule grazing at two corners and spine heel. The author's third novel and his best-known, on account of the film of the same title with Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. An unusually nice copy of the first impression.
Sinopsis
The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969), by John Fowles, is a period novel inspired by the 1823 novel Ourika, by Claire de Duras, which Fowles translated to English during 1977 (and revised in 1994). He was a great aficionado of Thomas Hardy, and, in particular, likened his heroine, Sarah Woodruff, to Tess Durbeyfield, the protagonist of Hardy’s popular novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891).
