Contemporary half black morocco with six spine compartments between raised bands. Gilt-tooled title on red leather label i second cmopartment. Gilt-tooled decoration on spine. Purple cloth over boards. Top page edges gilt. In addition to The Fudges in England, a humorous poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779-1852), includes shorter humorous poems by Moore collected under the title Trifles, Reprinted. In Very Good Condition: leather is rubbed; spine label is intact; occasional light soiling and foxing; otherwise, clean and tight.

First continental edition; 12mo, pp. [8], 140; uncut and partially unopened; some wear along the spine but generally near fine in original printed yellow wrappers. "The Fudges in England is an 1835 sequel to Thomas Moore's 1818 work The Fudge Family in Paris, which had depicted the visit of the fictional British Fudge Family to Paris, where the daughter Biddy had fallen in love with a young man whom she had taken to be the King of Prussia but was in fact a draper ... The sequel is set some years later, in a spa town likely to be Bath, where the grown-up Biddy has travelled. Biddy has since become an evangelical Protestant, and because of the large inheritance she is expected to receive she is a target for fortune-hunting Irish suitors" (Wikipedia).

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea, & Blanchard, 1835. Published under the pseudonym "Thomas Brown," this is the work of Thomas Moore (1779-1852), who is sometimes known as the "national poet" of Ireland. Also a musician, his melodies were wildly popular in the 19th Century, and he also wrote a history of Ireland. His first book on the Fudges came out in 1818, and was very popular. This sequel, a satirical verse novel, was less successful, and copies are VERY SCARCE. This is a Very Good (minus) copy of the First American Edition. Cloth binding, originally purple but faded to tan on the spine and edges. Paper label on the spine, a bit scuffed but perfectly readable. Clean text; 178 pages, very minimally foxed. There is a previous-owner signature on the front paste-down and a second one (dated 1902) on the FFEP which has been covered with a pasted paper label [the signature showing through].The book, while complete, is in delicate condition.
