He was captured in WWI, becoming a prisoner of the Bolsheviks in Siberia. After Commanding a battalion at Dunkirk, and XIII Corps in North Africa he led XXX Corps in Normandy after D-Day. He participated in the Arnhem and the Ardennes operations, ending the war taking the surrender of German forces in Northern Germany. As one of Britain's most dynamic WWII generals he was invalided out of the Army and went on to take up the distinguished post as Black Rod in the House of Lords in the British Parliament.
