A scarce, early Spanish gazette, dealing chiefly with the Polish efforts against the Turks; with content related to America.

Gaceta general deals mainly with the Polish military efforts against the Turks, a topic which in these years was in the focus in an overwhelming number of publications. Nevertheless, this publication offers also a section with short news from "all over the world", among them one of the first printed news on the 1683 Attack on Veracruz, and the death of one of the perpetrators, the Dutch pirate Nicholas van Hoorn (c. 1635-1683); the outset of the War of the Reunions (1683-84); and of the death of Louis, Count of Vermandois, the eldest surviving son of Louis XIV of France, on 18 November 1683 in Courtray.

The longest section, the conclusion of the Gaceta is the translation of the oration of the commander of the armies of the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, John III Sobieski of Poland, before the decisive siege against the Turks on 12 September 1683, later known as the Battle of Vienna.

Gazettes appeared in Spain in the 17th century, the first issues of Gaceta Nueva (Gaceta de Madrid) were published in 1661-2. This organ was suspended for almost two decades to reappear for another short period between 1678 and 1680 when all gazettes became prohibited in Spain by law. Despite such jurisdiction, the 1683 Gaceta general with a license at the Royal Printing Office was somehow issued, probably because it is rather a 'relación' an occasional account, than a gazette, a periodical newspaper.
