The analysis of what became five quartets were written in the same period as the Missa solemnis and the Ninth Symphony. John Deathridge writes: "a remarkable scholarly debut..[the author] deftly recaptures the initial bewilderment of Prince Galitzin, the patron who commissioned them." An essential work on these quartets but also the wider context of the Ninth and the Missa Solemnis.
