NP, 1830. Single sheet of lined paper, 20.5 x 16.5 cm. Caption and 24 lines of verse on recto and verso, plus several trial lines. Sheet folded and wrinkled, some small separations without loss, some old staining and toning, a tender copy. Manuscript copy of the first four (of six) verses of this English folk tune, popular from the period of the Napoleonic wars throughout the 19th century. The story of Jane and Edward, who decide to marry knowing full well the vicissitudes of a soldier's life. Song sheet versions were printed by Deming in Boston in the 1820s and 1830s, and later by De Marsan in New York.
