Sobre este artículo
Milan: L.F. Cogliati, 1913. Small 4to. Original embossed boards. IX, 324 pp., 50 illustrations on plates. The Duchy of Mantua was famous for its art collection, mainly due to the patronage of the ruling family, the Gonzagas. However, extravagant spending led to the Gonzaga family experiencing financial difficulties around 1627. After a series of negotiations, King Charles I purchased a significant portion of the art collection, comprised of hundreds of paintings and sculptures. Overnight, Britain had acquired a world-class Italian art collection. The artists represented included Andrea Mantegna, Titian, Raphael, Correggio, Caravaggio, Giulio Romano, Andrea del Sarto, and many others. This purchase was representative of a trend among the British ruling class of the time to acquire and appropriate Italian Renaissance culture.
This text documents the famous collection bought by Charles I, with numerous documents from the archives of both London and Mantua. The volume contains notes, an index, and 50 illustrations on plates.
