Sobre este artículo

London: WM. S. Orr & Co.,, 1849. A smart copy of this very successful work. "Originally issued in parts, The Gallery of Nature (1846) was lavishly illustrated with wood engravings and was revised and reprinted several times, demonstrating a longevity far beyond most popular illustrated works of its day" (Fyfe, p. 208). Milner (1808-1883) published religious tracts before turning to science from a Christian perspective; in the latter genre, The Gallery of Nature was his first major publication. In 1849 he was elected to the Royal Geographical Society, and soon "had acquired a reputation as a sound writer of reference works and textbooks" (ibid., p. 218). Octavo (250 x 165 mm). Contemporary brown morocco, spine with raised bands, compartments lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt, boards gilt panelled, inner dentelles tooled in blind, gilt edges. Engraved frontispiece and title page, 7 similar plates, 8 double-plate maps of which 4 in colour, small engravings throughout. Contemporary bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Corners bumped, inner hinges cracked, book block remaining firm and square, contents foxed, scattered creases to corners. A very good copy. Aileen Fyfe, "Conscientious Workmen or Booksellers' Hacks? The Professional Identities of Science Writers in the Mid-Nineeth Century", Isis, vol. 96, No. 2, June 2005.
