Printed at head of each title page: "Under the superintendence of the Society for the diffusion of useful knowledge." Some wear to extremities. Volumes 3, 4, and 6 have small chips to spine. Boards rubbed. Volume 1 has a stain to the lower corner of the FFEP. Occasional foxing. A collection of 168 biographies with accompanying portraits of distinguished poets, philosophers, statesmen, artists, architects, etc. With tissue-guarded steel engraved portraits of Dante Alighieri, Nicolaus Copernicus, Sir Isaac Newton, George Frideric Handel, Richelieu, Peter the Great, Mozart, Petrarch, Bossuet, Queen Elizabeth, Raphael, Sir Walter Scott, Titian, Thomas Jefferson, Rembrandt, Blaise Pascal, Galileo Galilei, Benjamin Franklin, Nicolas Poussin, Cromwell, Leonardo da Vinci, Goethe, Napoleon, Martin Luther, George Washington, and many others.
