Limited to 950 copies, the present copy is #117 signed by Jack O'Connor and the president of N.S.F.L Jim Rikhoff. 306 pages, select bibliography, illustrated by Rich Hauser, and with a foreword by Jim Rikhoff. The wonderful dedication is about how he met and married his wife in 1947 is a great tale in its own right. In his introduction he talks not about the hunter who wantonly kills but rather about how the expansion of society, mining, and pollution has brought into decline the culture that once existed. I think Ed Abbey would have loved this chapter. He introduces the Southwest as a game country ranging from the Desert Mule, and Desert Bighorn Sheep to the Javelinas, quail, El Tigre (the Mexican jaguar) and the Coyote as Desert Racketeer. Although many a city person has an aversion to the hunter (much as myself), he soon learns as he reads that the great hunters were always in the forefront of environmental concerns, such as Teddy Roosevelt and the Boone and Crockett Club, and here Jack O'Conner. A fine copy bound in green leather pictorially stamped in gilt, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, housed in publisher's slipcase with just a few spots of rubbing.
