This book details a wealth of information on the geology of several regions of the United States, most notably Washington, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Lakes. It is filled with maps and other illustrations. The text is a strange mix, with the majority in English, but a substantial amount in French as well. I can't find a pattern in this, and it is not simply a bilingual printing. Size: 4mo - over 9 3/4" - 12" tall. 529 pp. A few marks on the endpapers, but the core text pages are tight and clean. Front board is literally hanging on by a thread, and should be considered detached. The spine covering is broken in several places and is also in imminent danger of being lost. Blue cloth, gilt and black lettering to cover and spine. Very light rubbing to spine ends, spine is sunned but readable, former owner's bookplate on front pastedown, interior is clean and sound, and book is in overall very nice condition. Printed in the intermediate stage of Pitman's Shorthand. Text is in Pitman Shorthand and ilustrations throughout by John Tenniel.

William King Tweedie DD (1803-1863) was a historian, biographer and a minister of the Free Church of Scotland Tolbooth Church, Edinburgh. He was born in Ayr on 8 May 1803, the eldest son of John Tweedie and Janet King. His parents moved to Buenos Aires in South America while William was young and he was left in the care of an aunt in Maybole. He never saw his parents again, and was effectively abandoned. He studied Divinity at Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews University. He was licensed to preach as a minister of the Church of Scotland by the Presbytery of Arbroath in 1828. He was ordained as minister of the Scots Church at London Wall in 1832. In 1836 he was translated to Aberdeen South Parish and in March 1842 to the Tolbooth Church on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh in place of Rev Thomas Randall Davidson, but as first minister of the recently completed masterpiece by James Gillespie Graham and Pugin.
