Thick robust psalm book, all leather on wooden boards, some loss of leather with wood showing on reverse panel and on spine head, original tin locks and leather connectors which still lock, worn covers with slight looseness show patterned design--complete 150 psalms, German text, Good or better copy, very many commentaries in Latin and German on first and last pages/margins which have their own charm, social and literary interest; First English book of complete psalms published in 1562-4, 1560 was the year of a Genevan psalter, this possibly the first German by a contemporary of Martin Luther (at least for a few years) who also believed in making High German available to Germans faced with Latin. 23pps of Selnecker's own comments and thoughts followed by 1400pps, red/black tp with engraving, countless woodcut initials at beginning of sections. Selnecker was a prominent theologian and hymns composer in the 16th c. Occasional blue lines or light pencil marks in margins but mainly clean, browned pages but little foxing, a quite respectable copy of a rare and important Christian work. Measures about 32cm x 19.5cm, maybe 7cm thick, six spine compartments. Maybe 5-7 kilos.
