The course, in turn, was based largely on my review paper. As the material progressed from the review article through the lectures to this book, the emphasis was changed. The article was intended to present a summary of knowledge and recent results to an audience already thoroughly familiar with the principles of laser operation. The lectures were intended to reach a wider audience, but because of time limitations a basic knowledge of laser physics had to be assumed.
