Sobre este artículo

London, H. Woodfall, jun., 1742.. 2 volumes divided into 7 books, based on materials collected by John Perceval, Second Earl of Egmont, privately printed, revised edition with imprint H. Woodfall, jun. 1742. Volume 2 revised and partly written by William Whiston. A SPECIAL HAND COLOURED EDITION. This set was given to William Upcott, a well known librarian and bibliophile, who has written a note in ink on the first free endpaper with his signature stating that the books were given to him by the family of George Baker. This is confirmed in Dibdin's The Library Companion which states: "the copy of copies' is that in the possession of Mr Baker, of St Pauls Churchyard, belonging to his late brother". Many coats of arms throughout, all hand coloured and most heightened with gold and silver gilt. Small 4to, approximately 230 x 140 mm, 9 x 5½ inches, 19 portraits, 1 an engraved plate of Sir Philip Perceval Kt, the other 18 are in mezzotint by J. Faber, all with hand coloured coats of arms and all but one with a tissue guard, plus 13 engraved plates of country seats etc., this copy contains 2 extra plates in Volume 1, at pages 273 & 286, 1 double page map of part of the estate of Rt. Hon. John Perceval, Earl of Egmont, County of Corke (some copies have 4 additional portraits of the Rawdon Family by Faber, not present in this set), many engraved coats of arms in the text all hand coloured, tables and genealogical tables, 1 large genealogical table, and several folding, both volumes rubricated and with hand coloured title pages printed red and black with hand coloured coat of arms and gilt borders, divisional title pages to the 7 parts also have hand colured coats of arms. Pages: Volume 1, xxxvii, (misnumbered xxix), [3], 1-30 - Epitome, misplaced by binder between pages xii & xiii, 1-457 (457 misnumbered 455) followed by 5 tables; Volume 2, [4], 1-452, (inserted Addenda, pages 452-460), 453 -533, the catchword at foot of page 452 follows on page 453 due to the 4 inserted leaves of Addenda, followed by double page table, pages 446-447 are present in this set. Bound in full straight-grain red morocco, gilt lettered and decorated spines with urns between raised bands and floral surrounds, 'London' and date at foot of spines, gilt decorated covers, large gilt decorated dentelles, (turn ins), blue decorated endpapers, all edges gilt. Bindings slightly rubbed, corners slightly worn with small bump to 1 top corner, the silver gilt on most coats of arms has oxidized and tarnished. Title pages, margins of a few portraits and a few pages of text have pale age-browning, 2 bookplates to pastedowns of both volumes (John Cole Nicholl and Lawrence Currie). A very good attractive set. James Anderson also wrote books on Free Masonry. See William Lowndes, The Bibliographer's Manual page 40-41, this set listed as the penultimate listing; J. Brunet Manel du Libraire, Volume 1, page 262; Dibdin, Library Companion, 2nd part, page 555. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
