Third book of stories by the versatile author. Smith was an engineer by profession (he built the foundations for the Statue of Liberty, the Race Rock Lighthouse, and other notable structures). He was also a successful artist, and late in life turned to writing the many stories for which he was famous in New York society. The title story of this collection involves an amiable tramp who insinuates himself into the home of a well-to-do New Yorker. Others in this collection deal with peripatetic artists and draw on the author's own experiences in Venice and elsewhere. Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915) achieved successful careers in both engineering and art before coming to literature at the age of 53. He was highly popular as both a novelist and short story writer, his most famous book being Colonel Carter of Carterville. Robert Howard Russell was the famous Publisher of the Turn of the Century.
