Sobre este artículo

Nice condition copy of "THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE and Historical Chronicle" by Sylvanus Urban with six consecutive bound issues - July to December, 1824. Volume XVII, Part II. Printed by John Nichols and Son in London. The issues are nicely illustrated with numerous engravings, some of which are full-page. Each issue contains a list of contents on the front cover. The volume is bound in three-quarter leather with marbled covers and five raised bands on the spine. The Gentleman's Magazine was the first publication to use the term "magazine" for a periodical. It carried original content from a stable of regular contributors, as well as extensive quotations and extracts from other periodicals and books. The magazine was a monthly digest of news and commentary on any topic the educated public might be interested in.

Here are a few examples of the contents: Prophecies in the Works of Nostradamus; Evils of Slavery in the West Indies; On the Origin of the American War; Journal of a Shipwrecked Seaman; Sect of Shakers in America; On the Gaming Houses at Paris; On the Chivalry of the Middle Ages; On Stonehenge and Druidical Groves; Critical Remarks on Virgil; Account of the Sandwich Islands; On the Celtic and Sanscrit Languages; Pleasures and Advantages of Agriculture; Cause and Effects of the Deluge; Description of a Spanish Bull Feast; On Small Effigies in Ancient Armour; Great Fire on London Bridge in 1633; Prayer Written by Queen Elizabeth...and much more.

Condition:
Clean covers and spine; wear to the corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior with only some occasional light foxing (though heavier foxing to the front and rear end papers). The last two text pages have some staining at the top edge. There is a "Massachusetts Historical Society" label affixed to the rear pastedown, and a previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
