The Gentleman's Magazine was an English periodical which first appeared in 1731. It was published without interrupt for nearly 200 years and was the first of its kind to use the term 'magazine'. It was published by Edward Cave, pseud. Sylvanus Urban.

This volume from the 1761 edition includes a variety of important and interesting contents including:

· Account of the British naval raid on St. Malo, 1758

· Description of Ceylon in the mid-18th-century

· Details and description on Egyptian mummification and embalming

o Egyptian gods – Harpocrates, Isis, Osiris

· Sugar trade in the Americas

· Processes of brewing beer (with a full-page engraving of the setup)

o Charles MacKenzie of Kilcoy was an ensign in the 78th Highlanders, 2nd battalion established in 1794. The regiment received battle honors in the Battle of Assaye, as well as the Battle of Maida and the Invasion of Java during the Napoleonic Wars. The regiment would merge with the 72nd Highlanders in 1881 to become the Seaforth Highlanders.
