Whittell's manuscript pencil inscription at the base of the title page makes clear the publishing dates. There is also stamped on the lower spine the date of 1888 along with 5 pounds, five shillings

4to, i-xxix, 524 pp, 21 fine hand colored, lithographs from drawings by J G Keulemans, wood engraved illustrations throughout the text. Both the text and plates are very clean and bright, though being a second issue copy, the color in some plates is slightly muted. Publishers green pebbled cloth, title in gold on cover and spine.

Seebohm (1832-1895) was an industrialist who dedicated most of his time to ornithology.
This works is a comprehensive treatise on the shore birds of the world and includes an analysis of his work and how he arrived at his conclusions. He explains the pre Darwin approach and this post Darwin approach.
