The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) is the UK's learned society and professional body for geography, founded in 1830 for the advancement of geographical sciences. Today, it is the leading centre for geographers and geographical learning. The Society has over 16,500 members and its work reaches millions of people each year through publications, research groups and lectures. The Society was founded in 1830 under the name Geographical Society of London as an institution to promote the 'advancement of geographical science'. It later absorbed the older African Association, which had been founded by Sir Joseph Banks in 1788, as well as the Raleigh Club and the Palestine Association. This issue contains the famed article by Sir Philip Joubert and Alexander Richard Glen entitled "High latitude Flying by Coastal Command in Support of Convoys to North Russia". This issue also includes information on Human Ecology in South-East Asia, South-West Persia (Pish-I-Kuh in Luristan), Cumberland Population Movements, the Spitsbergen Glacier, and Roman Syria. Joubert became Commander-in-Chief of Coastal Command in September 1936. He later served as Deputy of Staff at the South East Asia Command. He delivered this paper to the Royal Geographical Society on 4th February 1946, Glen was a noted Scottish Explorer and intelligence officer. In this paper Joubert has contributed a section of Strategic Aspects of Air Operations in High Northern Latitudes while Glen discussed The Battle for the Convoy Route in 1942. Both sections are illustrated with a number of photographs and sketch maps.
