The volumes are dated 1832, 1833 and 1834; Vizetelly, Branston and Co.; London. Complete in four volumes. Three-quarter leather bound with marbled covers, page edges and end papers. Each volume contains a frontispiece portrait. The volumes contain dozens of biographical sketches of prominent English men and women including Adam Smith, Isaac Newton, Jonathn Swift, Robert Burns, Thomas Paine, Captain James Cook, Daniel Defoe, Thomas Gainsborough, etc.
The contents are grouped into the following categories:
VOLUME I: The Royal Family, The Pretenders and Their Adherents, The Church, The Senate, Dissenters

VOLUME III: Voyagers and Travellers, Science, Literature
VOLUME IV: Political Economists, Rural and Domestic Economists, Painters, Sculptors, Architects, Engravers, Vocal Performers, Instrumental Performers, Dramatic Performers
Condition:
Great covers with only some light shelf wear to the board edges; the spine label of vol IV has flaked off; some light chipping to a few other labels; bright gilt lettering and designs on the spines. All volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. The volumes nearly appear unread read on the insides - the pages are clean and white with no notable condition issues. Overall a terrific condition set.
