Paris: Pierre-François Didot, 1787. A superb complete set of the original 44 plates of Geraniologia (no title leaf), all very bright and clean without foxing or other marks, they are in their original uncoloured state and printed on wove paper. Because they have never been bound, the edges are all uncut, the sheets measuring approxing 355mm x 535mm. To find a set in such clean condition in untrimmed state is exceptional. A few of the later plates are a little worn/creased to the margins, plate 41 is a little more creased at the top, just affecting the plate impression. The title page is not present in this set but a facsimile has been expertly let into the front panel of the Solander box. This is a superb production, finished in green buckram and inlaid with panels of red morocco to the spine and front board, which are stamped in gilt. The edges are finished in mauve cloth and the box lined with acid-free paper; the plates are protected within a folding card casing. This rare portfolio contains some of Redoute's best early work. L'Heritier took great interest in and helped guide the careers of both Pierre Joseph Redouté and James Sowerby, both important botanical artists. In this present work, six plates are based on paintings by Sowerby, while thirty-one are after Redoute (The other artists involved being Claude Aubriet, Louis Freret, B. Pernotin and S. Taylor).. L'Heritier chose to leave the plates uncoloured, because he felt that "if his engravings were coloured, much of the sharpness and precision would be lost. The plates by Sowerby and Redoute are particularly fine, and provide us with an example of the early work of these two botanical illustrators, when they were still under the influence of the great French tradition established by Robert" (An Oak Spring Flora). Due to the outbreak of the French Revolution, the Geraniologia was never finished and was finally published in ca 1792, but the text was never published. References: An Oak Spring Flora 57; Nissen BBI 1188; Stafleu TL2 4494; Great Flower Books, p.65; Hunt Redouteana 10. Please contact for further details. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket. Illus. by Redoute, Pierre-Joseph, et al. Folio. Book, Fine Art Print.

Paris: F. Schoell, 1813. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Elephant Folio. The publication history of this work is difficult to determine though it would appear to have been published between 1808-1813 and then discontinued. It also seemed to have later assumed the name 'Flora Parisiensis'. This copy includes the half-title page, title page [Flore Parisienne] followed by 32 pages of text and 44 leaves of fine uncoloured stipple-engraved plates. This copy includes the original information slip which states "Les neuf premiers Livraisons renfermeront Les Nos 1-5, 7-10, 13,15, 17-20, 22-26, 28-32, 34, 35, 37-41, 45-53, 59, 61, 68 des Planches. London: Thomas Cotes, 1640. First edition. Large thick folio, title page, dedication page, preface two pages, author's tributes ten pages, then (ii), 1734 (but actually slightly less as there are several errors of pagination), illustrated with over 2,100 woodcut figures, lacking the extra engraved title page, the 20-page addenda at the rear and the errata leaf, but otherwise complete and very sound. The contents are extremely clean and tight, there is the odd crease and an occasional tiny corner missing but overall in impressive condition. The front and rear endpapers are a little browned and marked, both front and rear hinges are cracked and showing a little silver-fish damage but there is no weakness at all. Full panelled calf, probably eighteenth century but possibly earlier, a little rubbed, a little worn at the edges, scuffed on the upper cover, rebacked fairly recently with a leather spine and red morocco label. Descripción:
Rare complete copy of Keika Hasegawa's Keika Hyakugiku (100 chrysanthemums by Keika)(The British Museum only has Volumes 1 and 2, the Smithsonian only 2 and 3.)75 colour woodblock prints (all published), including eight double-page, from this seminal book on the cultivation of chrysanthemums. Volumes 1 and 2 published in July 1893 and Volume 3 published in December 1903. Chrysanthemum cultivation came to Japan from China in the 8th century and the flower was later adopted as the Emperor's crest. Over the centuries, extraordinary hybrids of elegant shapes and vibrant colours were produced, many of which are recorded in this book.Little is known about the artist Keika Hasegawa. (The name Keika is usually a woman's name.) Active in the final years of the 19th century, he also produced books of patterns for kimono and washi paper such as Biko Zukan (Art Book) 1894, and Kyoka Zuan (Patterns of Kyoto), 1897. Original wraps are grubby and worn, interior slightly browned and edges worn. A few prints with… Leer más

Illustrated with 96 very fine engraved plates (including 3 bis plates - XXXIII, LXXVII, LXXXVIII], a double-page engraved map of Sardinia (rather foxed), quarto, pp xii, 606; 562. (ii], + plates volume (96 plates of 114), remarkably clean internally, contemporary half calf and cloth, the spines with raised bands and black morocco labels, slightly rubbed and scuffed, a little wear at the corners. The engravings are by by L. Fea,, S. Botta, H. Mil and A. Nizza after drawings by M. Lisa and J.C. Heyland; there is a presentation inscription, in Latin, in the first volume, from the author to Sir Charles James Fox Bunbury. [Lacking the final volume, which was not published until 1857. The fact that the plates volume is here labelled Volume III suggests that Bunbury received these from the author in 1843, and the final volume was never presented. [London]: G. Brookshaw, 1812. Aquatint engraving, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. In excellent condition with the exception of a small mended tear on the top right margin not affecting platemark. Image size: 17 3/8 x 13 inches. Gilt frame. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece "Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits," the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent aquatint as a true work of art. Brookshaw published this seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. Pomona Britannica was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to… Leer más
