London: Royal Society of London, 1876. First Edition. Three Quarter Leather. Very Good. John Tyndall (1820-1893) described his experiments with a hermetically sealed chamber in which the atmospheric dust had been allowed to settle; sterilized infusions protected within this chamber remained uninfected for months, while similar infusions exposed to air all showed bacterial growth. Tyndall's researches, along with those of Pasteur, dealt the final blow to the doctrine of spontaneous generation and advanced the understanding of Germ Theory. x, 741 pp. 99 plates. 4to. Library binding, tan leather spine with gold embossed titling, scuffing and tears where call numbers have been removed. Interiors clean, ex-library stamp on title page, and occurring sporadically within. Numerous folding plates that illustrate articles. Pages were trimmed slightly when rebound.
