Contains black and white, and colour plates. Pages and plates are slightly tanned with mild foxing throughout. Heavier foxing to text-block edges. Pen inscription and pencil mark to front free endpaper. Mild foxing and tanning to pastedowns and endpapers. Slight cracking to gutters with exposed netting. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners, rubbing and staining to surface. Light sunning to boards edges. Heavy sunning to spine with notable crushing to spine ends. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) was an English writer. His prolific and diverse output included philosophy, ontology, poetry, journalism, biography, Christian apologetics, fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox". Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out.
