All edges in red. 575 p.p., [23] p.p. index. Includes engraved title-page. Ogier Ghislain Busbecq [1522-1592] was a Flemmish writer and diplomat, who was ambassador to the Ottomon Empire at Constantinople, in 1554 and 1556, under the reign of Suleyman I. Bubescq later served as a councillor to Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I in 1562. The book contains Busbecq's four letters of the Turkish Embassy, military affairs, the embassy to Suleyman and Ferdinand, an letter to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II, and a look at the life of the author. Bookplate of Frederick J.0. Montagu to front pastedown. Vellum soiled. Spine darkened, with lettering and gilt faded. Front inner hinge cracked. Top-edge of front free endpaper cut out [31.75mm x 12.7mm]. Sporadic foxing. Some dog-eared pages and chip to lower corner of p. 39, not affecting text. Else a very good copy.
