Annie and Estoria Stephens were sisters. Bookplate of Stephens Mitchell on the front paste down. Fair condition only. Provenance from the estate of the Mitchell family in Atlanta, Georgia.

Estora Fitzgerald Stephens (1867-1889) was the daughter of Annie Fitzgerald Stephens and John Stephens. She died in November of 1889 and is buried at the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.

There were two Annie Fitzgerald Stephens in the immediate Stephens family. Inscription is likely that of Annie Stephens (1870-1910) daughter of Annie Fitzgerald Stephens and John Stephens. Annie Stephens was Margaret Mitchell's aunt. Her sisters included Estoria Stephens and Margaret Mitchell's mother Mary Isabel Stephens (Mitchell).

Annie Elizabeth Fitzgerald Stephens (1844 -1934) married John Stephens in 1863. She was a landowner, political activist, and devout Catholic. The family had 12 children including Annie Stephens and Mary Isabell (Maybelle) Stephens Mitchell. Annie Fitzgerald Stephens was the grandmother of Margaret Mitchell and Stephens Mitchell. Many consider Annie Fitzgerald Stephens the inspiration for "Scarlett O'Hara" in Gone With the Wind. She was not well liked by her family (including Margaret) and was considered a vulgar woman.

Stephens Mitchell (1896-1983) was the son of Eugene Muse Mitchell and Isabel "Maybelle" (Stephens) Mitchell. He was born 1896 in Atlanta. His sister was Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind. Stephens Mitchell attended the University of Georgia and was a prominent Atlanta attorney, historian, and devout Catholic. He also edited the Atlanta Historical Bulletin. After John Marsh, husband of Margaret, died in 1952 Stephens became the executor of Margaret Mitchell's estate. Stephens Mitchell died in 1983 and the estate was passed on to his two sons Eugene Muse Mitchell II and Joseph Reynolds Mitchell.
