Early edition. Dated using the British Library. Illustrated with twenty-three plates printed in oil colours. Collated missing frontispiece. Including: Sing a Song o' Sixpence, The Robin's Christmas Eve, Robin Hood & his Merry Men, and The Sea Side. Written by Laura Valentine, under the pen name Aunt Louisa, a Victorian English writer known for her children's literary series. Illustrated by Kronheim and Dalziels. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, worn with bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Some loss to the cloth on the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light age toning. Frontispiece and title page have been removed. Fair

FIRST EDITION circa 1867 (no titles on adverts later than 1866, inscribed Dec. 25th 1868), 280 x 190 mm, 11 x 7½ inches, cloth backed pale yellow boards, repeat illustration on upper cover, engraved frontispiece with 2 images and 19 large charming engraved illustrations (uncoloured) all of sweet children, happy, sad, shy, cross, reading etc., each with descriptive verse below, printed 1 side only. Boards a bit rubbed, lightly soiled and marked, corners worn and rounded, small chip to surface and small red stain to lower cover, small light stain to upper cover at lower edge, spine slightly worn at head and tail with tiny nicks to cloth, neat inscription on front endpaper, contents otherwise bright and clean. Tilsley. Each plate is divided in 2 parts vertically within gilt border, the larger section (2/3) is printed on gilt ground. Plates and text pages printed 1 side only. Contains Little Dame Crump; Hush-a-Bye Baby; Childhood's Delight; and Tottie's Nursery Rhymes. Expertly recased with matching cloth spine, original backstrip laid down, corners slightly worn, tiny chip to cloth at top edge of upper board, a few marks to cloth on lower board. Tiny tear to margin of 1st plate, repaired, rear endpaper slightly frayed at edges. A very good plus copy. Osborne II,689. FIRST EDITION 1868 (date printed on title page), 4to, 270 x 230 mm, 10½ x 9 inches, red cloth, blind stamped and gilt decorated to upper cover, ornate central gilt panel, another for spine title, all edges gilt, pages linen mounted. 24 very good colour plates printed by 'Kronheim and Dalziels' for 4 stories: Sing a Song o' Sixpence, The Robin's Christmas Eve, Robin Hood and his Merry Men (13 images on 6 plates) and The Sea Side (11 images on 6 plates). Old amateur repair to 5 mm (½") of cloth at head and tail of spine, spine edges and corners slightly worn, 2 small splits to upper hinge neatly glued, dark stain to lower cover 70 x 90 mm, (3½" x 3"), front and rear inner paper hinges partly cracked, binding firm. Occasional pencil scribble to blanks, most erased, text pages slightly browned, occasionally quite foxed. Inscription dated 1869 on front endpaper. A good plus tight copy. Hand coloured frontispiece and 19 enchanting large HAND COLOURED illustrations by German artist Pletsch depicting young children: playing together and with toys and books, in various moods, bashful, shy, ill humoured etc., each with 8-line verse below.
